Psychodynamic therapists believe that an individuals’ actions, feelings, and beliefs are driven by unconscious thought processes. As unconscious thoughts are inaccessible to us, a psychodynamic therapist strives to help the client gain self understanding and insight by accessing thoughts just underneath the conscious level ( aka subconscious ).
This can be done by free associations, looking at a person’s pattern of thoughts, helping individuals understand their emotions , and looking at a person’s responses to others. Psychodynamic goals include increasing self awareness, improving relationships, and making better choices.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on isolating the belief system of underlying feelings and behaviors. CBT therapists believe that thoughts produce emotions which in turn influences behavior. Thoughts that no longer serve individuals (cognitive distortions) are isolated and challenged. At times, a CBT therapist may ask a client to change behaviors as a way to challenge their thinking. This ultimately leads to an alleviation of symptoms.
Solution Focused therapy focuses on the solutions vs the problems. It focuses on the positives, strengths, and the inner wisdom of individuals to help them get through current challenging circumstances. The therapist guides the client to identify skills, traits, and life experiences that can be used to resolve these issues helping clients understand that they have the answers inside of them all along.
Dialectic Behavioral Therapy commonly known as DBT is most effective with individuals who frequently undergo severe distressing and overwhelming emotions. Unlike CBT which encourages new, healthy neural pathways to form through reframing and challenging old patterns of thought, DBT aims to reduce the intensity and frequency of the existing, unhealthy neural pathways aiming to weaken it Its goal is to improve emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
Somatic means “ relating to the body” . It is believed that when emotions, especially emotions during a traumatic event, are unprocessed, it becomes lodged and trapped in our bodies. A somatic therapist helps clients become “ unstuck” by using techniques that help release that energy. This can be done by various techniques used in EMDR, body awareness, grounding, resourcing, and titrations.
